A woman drops out of medical school her first year to ‘create life’

“Why are you doing this?” Her friends and teachers ask. Why not wait until after she earns her Ph.d? She’s top of her class, on a fully paid scholarship. She smiles and tells them all the same thing-why become one smart scientist when you can make six? Isn’t that a more productive use of her time?

Her friends are confused, but support her in her move to an old family house in some reclusive spot a twelve hour drive from the school. After the last of the boxes are unpacked, the woman ties an apron around her waist and sighs with content.

She makes her way through one of the numerous dubious passages in the old mansion, down a winding staircase to a little, dusty room. Away from all the stress of medical school, it feels like she can finally relax. She’s so excited to begin making human life. She sits down and opens her favorite book-
